How the flooring calculator works

Measure your room's length × width to get the base area, then add a waste percentage to account for cuts, fitting, and defective pieces. The calculator divides the total area by the coverage per box to determine how many boxes to buy.

How much waste to add

Waste factor depends on your room shape, layout pattern, and experience level:

  • 10% — rectangular rooms, straight lay pattern, experienced installer
  • 12–15% — L-shaped rooms, diagonal layout, or first-time DIY
  • 15–20% — herringbone or chevron patterns, rooms with many closets and alcoves

Measuring irregular rooms

Break irregular rooms into rectangles, calculate each separately, and add them together. For L-shaped rooms, measure the two rectangular sections independently. Always measure at the widest and longest points of each section.

Methodology. Area = Length × Width. Area with waste = Area × (1 + Waste%). Boxes = ceil(Area with waste ÷ Box coverage). Default waste factor is 10% for standard rectangular rooms; increase to 15% for diagonal layouts or rooms with many obstacles.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate flooring for an L-shaped room? +
Divide the L into two rectangles. Measure each one's length and width, calculate the area of each, then add them together. Apply waste factor to the total. This gives a more accurate result than trying to measure the L as one shape.
How many boxes of flooring do I need? +
Divide your total area (including waste) by the coverage listed on the flooring box. Most laminate and hardwood boxes cover 20–25 sq ft. Always round up to the next whole box — you can't buy partial boxes.
What's the cheapest flooring option? +
Vinyl plank (LVP) at $1.50–$3/sq ft is typically the most affordable. Laminate runs $2–$4/sq ft. Engineered hardwood is $4–$8/sq ft. Solid hardwood starts at $5–$10/sq ft. These are material-only prices; installation adds $2–$5/sq ft.
